Why I Dye in Small Batches (and Why I Always Will)

Hi, sweet friends! šŸ¤
I wanted to take a moment to share a little more about how Motherhook Fiber & Co. works—and why small-batch dyeing is something I’ve chosen with my whole heart.

For a long time, I believed that success had to look loud and busy. Like my calendar needed to be full, my hands needed to be in everything, and if I wasn’t constantly doing more, I must not be doing enough. That hustle mindset was everywhere when I was growing up—and honestly, it’s exhausting. I’ve felt firsthand how draining and unsustainable that way of living can be.

Dyeing yarn in small batches has become my way of choosing something different.

When I work slowly, I’m able to be fully present with the yarn. Every skein passes through my hands. I get to watch the colors bloom, notice the subtle shifts, and respond to what the fiber is doing in that moment. That presence matters to me. I truly believe it shows up in the finished yarn—and even in the packages that arrive at your door. I want opening a Motherhook Fiber package to feel like a deep breath, a pause, the biggest hug.

If I were rushing, I don’t believe I could offer that same care. Speed would pull me away from the details, from the intention, from the quiet joy that lives in this work. Small-batch dyeing allows the process to matter just as much as the end result, and that feels important to me.

As a mom, this choice goes even deeper. I want my kids to grow up knowing they don’t have to do all the things all the time to be worthy or successful. They don’t need packed schedules or constant hustle to prove how capable they are. They can pour themselves into a few things they love, do them well, and still be enough. Still be successful. Still be proud of who they are.

Small-batch dyeing protects that value in my own life, too. It allows me to be creative without burning out, present without feeling pulled in every direction, and proud of work that reflects care rather than speed. I’m not chasing constant restocks or endless growth. I’m choosing sustainability—emotionally, creatively, and personally.

I will always dye in small batches because I believe slowing down is a form of success. It’s not falling behind. It’s being intentional. It’s building something that fits the life I want to live and the example I want to set.

Motherhook Fiber & Co. is built on trust, care, and the belief that handmade things—and the people who make them—are allowed to take their time. Thank you for being here, for valuing that, and for choosing slow with me.

Love y’all BIG. Please take care of yourselves šŸ¤

Love + Stitches,
Ashley
